The Importance and Applications of AI to Naval Operations
While navies have used automated systems for many decades to enhance their decision-making speed and quality, such as close-in weapons systems (CIWS), artificial intelligence (AI) holds the promise of taking such augmentation to a whole new level. Maritime services in general have been gradually introducing autonomous systems, such as aerial and underwater drones, to remove menial tasks from crewed operations and improve the standard of data-gathering, leading to serious debate about how AI can be incorporated into non-routine tasks, such as active targeting and firing. However, significant questions remain as to how to effectively yet ethically integrate AI, including where to include people in decision loops, and how involved AI should be in making lethal decisions. US Navy Captain (retired) and New York Times best-selling author George Galdorisi, will lead a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of autonomous systems and AI for navies, and what the future might hold for these promising technologies.
