Session Four: A Different Approach: How Do We Get There?

Description

Emerging adults, young people between the ages of 18-24 years old, experience the worst racial disparities within the criminal justice system of of any age group. Research, case law, and practice show that changing policies and services for this age group significantly increases their success and improves community safety.

Session Four, entitled "A Different Approach: How Do We Get There?", will examine practices and policies that respond to the needs of emerging adults through community based responses. Topics will include specialized court and probation, prevention and intervention strategies, and funding models to support them. Lael Chester (Columbia Justice Lab), Tyrone Walker (Justice Policy Institute), and Jamaal Smith & TeAngelo Cargile, Jr. (City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention, 414 Life) will lead this discussion.

Smith (Violence Prevention Manager @City of Milwaukee Health Department Office of Violence Prevention) Jamaal E. Smith, MPA is the Violence Prevention Manager for City of Milwaukee Health Department Office of Violence Prevention who focuses on public policy advocacy, community engagement, and implementation of Blueprint for Peace. Tyrone Walker (Associate @Justice Policy Institute) As an Associate at JPI, Tyrone utilizes his experience, expertise and passion for prison reform to advocate for change. Recently, he co-authored "DC'S Young Men Emerging Unit: A Story of Reform and Lessons Learned from the Front Lines" (2020). While he was incarcerated, Tyrone tutored other incarcerated men studying for their GEDs, and he formally became a mentor in the Young Men Emerging Unit, a program in the D.C. Department of Correction’s Central Treatment Facility, which matched young men with mentors. Lael Chester (Director of the Emerging Adult Justice Project @Columbia University's Justice Lab) Lael Chester is Director of the Emerging Adult Justice Project at Columbia University’s Justice Lab and leads the national and international research on Emerging Adult Justice. Lael led the successful Justice for Kids Campaign, ending the practice in Massachusetts of automatically prosecuting and sentencing all 17 year olds as adults, regardless of the severity of the offense. Her expertise on other advocacy campaigns include school-to-prison pipeline, parent-child privilege, racial disparities and over-use of secure confinement.
