First Responder Relationships: Communication Blockages and Boundaries in First Responder Relationships
Relational wellness is essential to the resilience of the first responder and the first responder family. Communication in first responder relationships can be difficult due to stress and shifts resulting in lack of communication and sharing or conflict. While communication in all relationships are important, debriefing from the day can be impactful to the mental health of the first responder and family. However, there are blockages to communication that many first responders families need to acknowledge including the desire to protect and verbal and emotional responses. Addressing blockages allows families to establish boundaries, develop a process, and impact their relational wellness.

Learning Objectives:
Define relational wellness and its impact on resilience.
Understand common blockages to communication regarding listening or sharing first responder stress.
Assess personal blockages in relationships.
Appropriate ways to discuss potential blockages.
Apply boundary setting to conversations within the relationship if necessary.
