‘The State of Migration and Human Rights in South Africa: Which way from here?’
In the past decade, South Africa has experienced sporadic attacks on foreign nationals, especially Africans from beyond our borders. Although democratic South Africa has had similar incidents of the kind, it was only in 2008 that the attacks – often violent – began to attract national and international attention and condemnation. The dominant discourse describes these attacks as ‘xenophobia’, a description which is highly contested.
