Historically Well: Healing the Enslaved
Discussing the wellness of enslaved people seems contradictory, at best. Plantations were environments that cared little for an enslaved person’s mental, physical, or even spiritual well-being. What happened, though, when an enslaved person became seriously ill? In this episode of Historically Well, we’ll explore the types of healing remedies described by Sarah Ford and Anthony Christopher in their oral histories. We’ll also examine Patton plantation probate records that detail the medical treatments administered to the enslaved people on the plantation for more severe illnesses.
