The last IPCC report published in early April brought news that we have three years left to reach peak greenhouse gas emissions and then they must decline if we are to stay on a 1.5 degree pathway. How many of our colleagues and students know this? How many know the importance of limiting the increase of global average temperature to 1.5 degrees? Probably very few! We need rapid transformational change in order to avoid catastrophic and irreversible climate change. We need a rapid cultural shift and education is crucial in order for that change to happen. All schools need to be models of sustainability. An ethos of sustainability should be woven into the fabric of school life. How do we achieve this in the context of a widespread culture of apathy and acceptance?
In this panel discussion four secondary school educators, who are climate activists, discuss their thoughts on what exactly is a sustainable school? They will share their experience of how to get colleagues on board, what activities and lessons help to get students interested, how to promote active democracy and how to ensure that we as schools are not part of green-washing.
