Virtual Native American Artist Series - Calvin Hunt
Calvin Hunt is a Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) artist in British Columbia working within the traditional Northwest Coast Kwagu’l style, with elements of traditional southern Kwakwaka’wakw art. Teachings from Chiefs, Elders, and other artists have all contributed to Calvin’s knowledge and inspiration as he works mainly in western red cedar to create totem poles, including a recently acquired totem pole in our We Are Still Here Exhibit, as well as masks and dance outfits. In addition to creating his own art, he also restores totem poles and dances in the Copper Maker Dancers. As one of the featured artists in our Virtual Holiday Market, join Calvin, along with IAIS staff for a Zoom-based presentation on his traditional carving style and its significance to his culture.
