Dame Clare Marx, Chair of the GMC (General Medical Council), past Chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, and former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and British Orthopaedic Association, will be joining Professor Sir Simon Wessely (RSM Past President) for a stimulating discussion about her career, leadership in the medical profession, her views on the tensions in current medical training, and challenges and opportunities for the GMC.
Clare joins a growing body of women leaders in healthcare. She became a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Mary’s and St Charles’ in 1990 before moving to work at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust in 1993 for the next 20 years, becoming Associate Medical Director for appraisal and revalidation in 2013.
Clare chaired the Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Advisory Committee for the Royal College of Surgeons and co-authored the first competency-based curriculum in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. She received a CBE for services to medicine in 2007. In 2009 she was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and chaired the Invited Review Mechanism from 2011-14 before being elected President of the RCS (2014-17), the first woman in the history of the College to hold this role.
She is the first woman to hold the Chair since the GMC was established 160 years ago.
