Explore two wines from Portugal! Harry Tatian of Free Run distributor joins VMFA’s Liz Skirpan, Amuse Manager, and Celeste Fetta, Director of Education. They will pair the wine selections with art from the museum’s collection, making connections to the region and considering the wine labels’ designs, which both feature birds. Wine selections available through VMFA 2GO Wed-Sat.
Quinta da Raza, Vinho Verde 2019 | $15
Located inland in the verdant Vinho Verde region, Quinta da Raza is the home and life of José Diogo and Mafalda Teixeira Coelho. The vineyards are subject to more sun than perhaps other vineyards in this region, which are important factors for the development of the vines. The Raza is a lightly sparkling, bright, and fresh wine, with fruity and pleasing aromas and balanced acidity. The bird which appears on the Raza label is the Lesser Kestrel, locally called “Peneireiro.”
Herdade de Gambia, Tinto (Red Blend) 2014 | $27
Herdade de Gambia was established in the Setubal region of Portugal, located South of Lisbon in the Sado Estuary. Alongside the vineyards are Cork and Pine trees, as well as livestock, all part of the forest/pastoral system. Great care is taken in management of the property since it is classified as Natura 2000 (a special protection area). The winemaker, Nuno Cancela de Abreu, produces a white and red wine at this Quinta. The Tinto has bright ruby color, offering a great balance between dark fruit, acidity, and elegant tannins. It is very smooth with a pleasant finish. The label for these wines features a mosaic-style crane, which honors the surrounding wildlife and demonstrates how vineyards can preserve the land in its natural state for generations.
