The Use of Pterygoid Implants for the Treatment of the Atrophic Maxilla, Free Live webinar 1CEU
The placement of dental implants in the posterior maxilla is often a challenge due to limitations in vertical bone height availability. In addition, this area can present a challenge to successful osseointegration due to poor marrow quality, vascular potential, low bone density and difficult access. The difficulties of inserting a long implant in this area by freehand measures alone, implies an unpredictable and difficult prosthetic reconstruction which ultimately questions the use of such implants.
Today, the use of the dynamic surgical navigation software for planning and execution in implant surgery has overcome the difficulty of freehand surgery as well as demonstrated improved accuracy outcomes. Furthermore, and from a prosthetic standpoint, the use of multiunit abutments (MUA) to compensate angulation challenges allows the clinician to consider the pterygoid implant option more confidently as an alternative to sinus augmentation surgery or the use of short (or ultrashort) implants in the posterior atrophic maxilla.
