The air entrainment template in FLOW-3D HYDRO
Air-water bubbly flows are near ubiquitous in water civil infrastructure, particularly in spillways and conveyance structures. These kinds of flows present numerous modeling challenges, both in the hydraulic laboratory setting and in its numerical CFD counterpart. The location, quantity and fate of dispersed air bubbles may have implications on the hydraulics of any given flow, affecting velocities, flow bulking, pressure, friction and so on. Some structures such as self-priming siphons even rely on air entrainment in order to operate. In this webinar we will explore FLOW-3D HYDRO’s air entrainment model. We will start with a review of the fundamental capabilities, including how to simulate the entrainment process and the subsequent fate of bubbles and bulking of the fluid. To illustrate and validate the use of the model, the presentation will include a discussion of the physics and modeling of several examples, including stepped and flat chute spillways, hydraulic jumps, and jet impingement in a cross flow. We will then show you how to set up an example simulation using the Air Entrainment Template, one of several Workspace Templates available in FLOW-3D HYDRO.
