"Whose Utopia?" is the title of Cao Fei’s video work which is on view during Berlin Art Week in the Atelier of the PalaisPopulaire. The Time Present exhibition shows the stills that emerged from this six-month project. The Chinese artist went to a light bulb factory in the Pearl River Delta and interviewed people who worked for a large corporation. She examined their lives, thoughts, and above all their dreams—an approach that is diametrically opposed to the interests of a multinational manufacturer focused on efficiency and maximizing profit. As in the Cao Fei’s oeuvre as a whole, this work also explores the contrast between global consumer culture and individual longing, between tradition and faith. She discusses these themes with Britta Färber, Chief Curator of the Deutsche Bank Collection.
