Marine Biodiversity, Fisheries and Ocean Post 2020 – Implications for the GBF

Through the 21st Century, mainstreaming biodiversity in sectoral planning and management has been a CBD priority. Under the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, sectors using biodiversity could report on their actions and outcomes under Targets 6 and 7, with expectations and benchmarks for fisheries particularly explicit in Target 6. The Global Biodiversity Framework currently does not have comparably explicit expectations for individual sectors, nor does the draft GBF include guidance on how sectors like fisheries would report on measures taken to ensure their impacts on biodiversity are sustainable and on the outcomes of those measures. This side event would bring together experts on fisheries with SBSTTA participants with an interest in ocean issues to have an open discussion on how the fishery sector could report their biodiversity outcomes, as well as supporting strategies and measures in the Post 2020 GBF.
