What’s in a Name? “Francophone”, “francophonie”: Quelques pistes de réflexion for Ethics
While embracing various acceptations already unveiling their complexity, the words “francophone” and “francophonie” have been consecrated, from their inception through print to their broad use in ordinary language, to refer to people, cultures and countries, related one way or the other, to French colonization. The origin of the terms, their concepts and application that unveil geo-political, racial, and power dynamic realities at play, beg for questions and reflection pertaining to ethics. If Francophonie aspires to credibility and authenticity concerning its relational philosophy and discourse on diversity, justice and equity how then might it account for a nomenclature, concepts and practices that do not compromise ethics? I want to seize the opportunity offered by the declared discourse of Francophonie on generosity, openness, inter-solidarity, mutual respect and mutual understanding to engage in such discussions which energy might contribute to raise and maintain awareness and aperture for new thoughts and practices benefitting all.
