The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby is the 105th and current Archbishop of Canterbury and senior bishop in the Church of England. Archbishop Justin will be talking to Professor Sir Simon Wessely, RSM immediate Past-President, about his extensive career and ministry, his perspective on how COVID-19 has impact communities and the UK economy, the importance of mental wellbeing, and the challenge of reimagining Britain; a belief that Christian heritage values can pave the way to hope and wisdom while embracing the multi-faith and multi-cultural society Britain is today – from Archbishop Justin’s 2018 book 'Reimagining Britain: Foundations for Hope'.
Before becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013, he was previously Bishop of Durham, Dean of Liverpool Cathedral and a Canon of Coventry Cathedral, where he worked extensively in the field of reconciliation.
Archbishop Justin has three main priorities for his ministry – Evangelism and Witness; Prayer and the Renewal of Religious life; and Reconciliation. He is a member of the High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation for the United Nations. He is also the author of 'Reimagining Britain' and 'Dethroning Mammon', both published by Bloomsbury.
Over the past year, Archbishop Justin has been a volunteer member of the chaplaincy team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in central London, providing frontline spiritual care for patients, staff and visitors at St Thomas’ Hospital.
