In this webinar, Professor Justin Gest (George Mason University) will offer a briefing about how to leverage the media for policy impact based on his new book, Mass Appeal: Communicating Policy Ideas in Multiple Media.

After a short presentation, Gest will be in conversation with Professor Kathleen McNamara (Georgetown University) to discuss how academic researchers can better communicate their ideas broadly, strategically, and effectively to various readers and audiences in a challenging public sphere.

This webinar is part of the CES Professional Development Webinar series and is open to CES individual and Research Network members in good standing.

He is the author of numerous articles and five books on the politics of immigration and demographic change. He has contributed reporting, commentary, or analysis to a variety of news publications in North America and Europe. In 2014 and 2020, he received Harvard University’s Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Prize and George Mason University’s Teaching Excellence Award, respectively each university’s highest award for faculty teaching. Kathleen R. McNamara (Professor of Government and Foreign Service @Georgetown University) Kathleen R. McNamara is Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where she has served as a Vice Dean for Faculty & Graduate Affairs, and Director of the Mortara Center for International Studies. Her work focuses on markets and culture in the European Union and the challenges of globalization. At Georgetown, she co-directs, with Professor Abe Newman, the Global Political Economy Project. Among her scholarly honors are the International Studies Association’s 2018 Distinguished Scholar in International Political Economy award. She has provided analysis to the National Intelligence Council and other government bodies and is a commentator in public fora and media outlets such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Washington Post, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and Marketplace.
