Price Transparency in Healthcare with Kevin Brennan, CPA, FHFMA and Vonda Moon, SunStone Consulting
For years the Industry has been under attack over amounts charged for services, often completely ignoring the much lower actual payments received. The TIME magazine article in 2013, “Bitter Pill”, ignited a wave of negative press and confusion that continues today. While the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) has responded with advice on rational pricing and released a Price Transparency Task Force Report in 2014, it failed to stop government requirements to disclose Charge Description Masters (CDM), January 1, 2019, in a machine-readable format nor the more recent proposed changes for price transparency effective January 1, 2020.

The speakers will discuss how we got to the current price transparency environment, current initiatives as well as discuss the HFMA-led Chargemaster Alternatives for Medicare Payment (CHAMP) work group, examining potential future Medicare reimbursement formula’s devoid of charge inputs. Alternative solutions for a dozen reimbursable items that use charges today will be reviewed as well as the implications and requirements of a future state. He will also discuss how to develop a rational and defensible price methodology.

Learning Objectives 1: Review the current price transparency environment; how did we get here, where do we go next?
2: Discuss the alternatives Medicare is evaluating through the Chargemaster Alternative for Medicare Payment work group. 3: Evaluate methodologies being utilized to develop rational and defensible prices for your facility.
