Presenter: Susannah Gal, PhD; Associate Dean of Research and Outreach, Professor of Biology; Penn State Harrisburg.
Description: In these times of attack on higher education and the research endeavor, it is more important than ever for faculty to distill a message into accessible chunks for journalists, policy makers, donors, funders and the general public. This presentation will describe two free tools for this purpose: Concept Paper and Message Box. These two complementary approaches can produce similar results though are primarily focused on different audiences. The Message Box is shorter, appropriate for brief conversations and the Concept Paper usually results in a one-page document that can be shared with potential collaborators, funders, donors or research development professionals. Research development professionals can implement these tools in working with faculty at small and large institutions. In this interactive webinar presentation, you will learn about these tools, be shown how they have been used with faculty in a workshop setting, and practice distilling a faculty’s message using provided examples or your own abstracts of faculty work. These tools provide faculty with insights on their work that they may never have realized and a newfound appreciation for how challenging and important this conversation can be. After such a workshop, the faculty come away with a workable document to use with a variety of people and the skill of communicating more effectively to a broad audience to better respond to federal funding opportunities. After this webinar session, you will have insight on how these tools can be used with faculty at your institution.
