The CEPR Political Economics Webinar series will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 15:00 London time.
The first webinar will take place on 6th of May, with Daron Acemoglu as our inaugural speaker and moderated my Sergei Guriev.
Daron Acemoglu will present his paper "War, Socialism and the Rise of Fascism in Italy: An Empirical Exploration” (co-authored with Giuseppe De Feo and Giacomo De Luca).”
This will be followed by Guido Tabellini on 3rd of June and moderated by Helios Herrera. Guido Tabellini will present his paper "Economic Shocks and Populism: the Political Implications of Reference Dependent Preferences (joint with Fausto Panunzi and Nicola Pavoni of Bocconi University)".
Our last speaker will be Eliana La Ferrara on 1st of July and moderated by Dominic Rohner.
The format of the webinars will be as follows: the speaker will have 60 minutes to present their research. During those 60 minutes, questions will be limited to clarifying questions. After that, there will be 15 minutes for general questions and discussions.

Daron Acemoglu an Institute Professor at MIT and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the Turkish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association, and the Society of Labor Economists. He has authored five books, including Why Nations Fail: Power, Prosperity, and Poverty and The Narrow Corridor: States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty (both with James A. Robinson). He researches political economy, economic development, economic growth, inequality, labor economics and economics of networks. He received the inaugural 2004 T. W. Shultz Prize, the inaugural 2004 Sherwin Rosen Award, the 2006 Distinguished Science Award from the Turkish Sciences Association, the 2017 Carnegie Fellowship, the 2018 Jean-Jacques Laffont prize, and the 2019 Global Economy Prize. He was awarded the 2005 John Bates Clark Medal, the 2012 Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize, and the 2016 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award. Eliana La Ferrara (Chair in Development Economics @Bocconi University) Eliana La Ferrara is the Invernizzi Chair in Development Economics at Bocconi University, where she also directs the Laboratory for Effective Anti-poverty Policies. Eliana received a PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 1999. She was president of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (2016-2019) and president of the European Economic Association (2018). She is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and of CEPR, EUDN and IGIER, a J-PAL Affiliate and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on Development Economics and Political Economics, particularly on the role of social factors in economic development. She has studied ethnic diversity, kin structure and social norms, and the effects of television on social outcomes. She has also investigated political constraints to development, with focus on violent conflict in Africa. She has published in the American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, among others. Guido Tabellini (Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Political Economics @Bocconi University) Guido Tabellini is the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Political Economics at Università Bocconi. He was Rector of Università Bocconi from 2008 to 2012. He has a PhD in Economics from UCLA. Before returning to Europe, he taught at Stanford University and UCLA. He is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Econometric Society, a foreign honorary fellow of the American Economic Association, and a recipient of the Yrjo Jahnsson award from the European Economic Association, of which he was President. He is Second Vice-President of the Econometric Society. He belongs to several international research networks and he is a research fellow of CEPR in London, a distinguished fellow of CES in Munich, and a research fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He has done research in political economics and public choice, macroeconomics, and international economics.
