AI and the Future of Teaching
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology, with support from Digital Promise, will host listening sessions over the next two months on Artificial Intelligence (AI). We want to hear from all constituents involved in making decisions about technology in education, including but not limited to teachers, educational leaders, students, parents, technologists, researchers, and policy makers. The topic of this listening session is teaching and the goal is to gather input, ideas, and engage in conversations that will be invaluable in helping the Department shape a vision for AI policy that is inclusive of cutting-edge research and practices while also informed by the opportunities and risks.

For the teaching session, we are particularly interested in learning more about how AI could assist teachers, including making their work more efficient, productive, convenient, or rewarding. We would also like to know how AI might strengthen teacher professional development. We want to explore how teachers remain in control, e.g. via human-in-loop models of AI. Conversely, we want to explore risks specific to the roles of teachers, which may include concerns about trustworthy AI, issues about data security, worries about monitoring and the privacy of classrooms, potential to amplify bias and other related issues. Recommendations for how to make AI safe and productive for teachers will be sought.

Staff from the Office of Educational Technology and Digital Promise will be in attendance to listen and the input that we receive will inform the development of a policy document addressing AI that builds on the Department’s National Educational Technology Plan.

Please note this opportunity is open to participants in the United States only.
