Hearing Hidden Voices: Older victims of domestic abuse

Description

This webinar will highlight issues faced by older women who are victims of domestic abuse, giving this very hidden population a voice. The aim of the event is to help inform academics, practitioners, and general members of the public key concerns in relation to older women and domestic abuse, and the barriers they face in accessing help.

It will include contributions from Dr Elizabeth Martin who will discuss findings from her PhD research, and Rebecca Zerk, who is Research Project Manager of Dewis Choice, the first dedicated service in the UK for older people who have experienced domestic abuse. Domestic Violence social work researcher and activist Prof. John Devaney from Edinburgh University, will Chair. A discussion will take place after the presentations.

Dewis Choice (https://dewischoice.org.uk/) offers the first dedicated service for older men and women who experience domestic abuse, inclusive of those living with dementia and those who identify as LGBT+ Elizabeth Martin (Dr @Queen's University Belfast) Elizabeth is a lecturer in Social Policy at Queen's University Belfast. The main focus of her PhD research was older women and domestic violence in Northern Ireland. She also looked at the issue of substance misuse amongst this population. John Devaney (Professor @University of Edinburgh) John Devaney is Centenary Chair and Head of Social Work at the University of Edinburgh.
