This webinar from Chain Reaction Research (CRR) and Forests & Finance will look into their recent research of who provides financing to companies in palm oil supply chains tied to deforestation. The session will cover the CRR report on the share of palm oil refining covered by NDPE policies. The share of refiners with NDPE policies increased from 74% in 2017 to 83% now. But compared to CRR’s 2018 study again on the financiers of leakage refiners, Asian banks have increased their exposure in loans and underwriting, while shareholding/bondholdings by Western investors have declined. The recently updated policy assessments by Forests & Finance show that only two out of 26 financiers and investors have policies that require palm oil-related clients (or invested companies) and their suppliers to ensure supply chain transparency and traceability. The lack of supply chain policies creates room for financing and investments to continue flowing to leakage refiners. Forests & Finance will discuss potential uses of their financial database and their recently updated bank policy assessments in palm oil related studies.
