The February ISBA Live Legislative Update Webinar will focus on the status of K-12 funding in the state budget and how Indiana schools fair comparatively with per pupil funding and teacher compensation across the nation.
State Representative Jeff Thompson, chair of the K-12 subcommittee of the Ways & Means Committee, will provide an overview of school funding included in the state budget bill moving through the House of Representatives. Rep. Thompson is a fiscal leader in the House Republican Caucus and helps develop the school funding formula. He will highlight the good news to be shared, while addressing any remaining funding challenges.
Upon completion of a Q&A session with Rep. Thompson, a study on school funding issues will be presented by Dr. Rob Toutkoushian, professor from the University of Georgia.
Dr. Toutkoushian's report looks at how public schools in Indiana are funded, how this funding compares to other states and how it has changed over time, how monies are allocated between teachers and other uses, and how well teachers are compensated in the state.
Dr. Toutkoushian is an accomplished author and researcher, and formerly worked as a professor at Indiana University, where he studied the equity of the school funding formula for the Indiana General Assembly.
