Join the Institute for our Student Ambassador sponsored event on Thursday, February 25 at 5:00 p.m. CT via Zoom for a conversation with Jeff Doherty, Carbondale City Councilman, and the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute Ambassadors, as they discuss Doherty's career in city affairs and economic development, the role of local government in our community, and the importance of student engagement in civic life.
Doherty was elected to the Carbondale City Council in 2017. He has over 40 years of experience working in local government and economic development. Doherty's local government career with the City of Carbondale began in 1976. He held positions in Community Development, Railroad Relocation and Human Resources, as Interim City Manager and as Deputy City Manager prior to being appointed City Manager in 1992 as Carbondale’s sixth City Manager. From 2010 to 2017, Doherty served as Executive Director of Jackson Growth Alliance, promoting economic and community development in Jackson County. He currently serves as President of Champion Community Investments, a Community Development Financial Institution serving southern Illinois, and on the board of directors for Jackson CEO, an entrepreneurial program for high school students in Jackson County.
