Don Collins
Fire Station Consultant, Professor, Clemson University (ret.) @Clemson University
Don served with the Clemson University Fire Department (CUFD), the largest university-operated fire department in North America. Operating from 2 stations with a fleet of 3 engines, 3 aerials, and 3 ALS units, CUFD serves a town-campus population of 40,000 that can quadruple on football weekends. With his construction specifications knowledge, heading the CUFD's apparatus procurement process became a major responsibility for most of his fire service service life. In support of his research, he has visited and photo documented hundreds of fire stations throughout North America. The analytical station visits have sharpened his insights into fire station design concept issues as well as design features ranging from those that work to those that resulted in varying degrees of failure. His photo collection of fire stations and fire station details is extensive.
