Panetta served as U.S. Secretary of Defense, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, White House Chief of Staff, and White House Budget Director. Panetta represented California’s 16th and later 17th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993. He served as the chairman of the House Budget Committee. Panetta is currently the chairman of The Panetta Institute for Public Policy at California State University, Monterey Bay.
