The Outlook for Global Energy and the Road to COP26

Many believe that the next decade is make or break for the climate. Businesses and governments are urgently shifting towards net zero. But this shift presents immediate economic challenges, especially with the world recovering post-Covid-19. How have the last nine months impacted these commitments? What does the future hold for the energy sector?

To consider these issues Spencer Dale, group chief economist at BP and former member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, will discuss the road to net zero with Andrew Brown, a partner at strategic communications firm Apella Advisors.

Spencer will speak for around 25 minutes, drawing evidence from BP’s upcoming Energy Outlook, after which Andrew will interview him and then take questions from the floor.

He manages bp’s economics and energy insights team which provides advice and analysis on the global energy system, the energy transition and the evolving nature of the energy system as it moves to net zero. The economics and energy insights team are responsible for producing bp’s annual Statistical Review of World Energy and bp’s Energy Outlook. Spencer Dale joined BP as group chief economist in October 2014. Prior to that, he was executive director for financial stability at the Bank of England and a member of the Financial Policy Committee. Between 2008 and 2014, Spencer was chief economist of the Bank of England and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. Spencer joined the Bank of England in 1989 and served in numerous roles, including private secretary to Mervyn King and head of economic forecasting. Spencer served as a senior advisor at the US Federal Reserve Board of Governors between 2006 and 2008. Andrew Brown (Partner @Apella Advisors) Andrew Brown is a partner at Apella Advisors, a leading strategic communications consultancy. Formerly Director of Communications and Public affairs at Ageas Insurance, Andrew was also Director of Communications at Drax Group plc as it accelerated its transition from coal to sustainable biomass, in the process becoming the UK’s single largest generator of renewable energy. During his time there he led a cross-functional team to fundamentally reposition the firm’s reputation with its most important stakeholders and the wider public. He worked closely with the Sustainable Biomass Partnership and advised the Carbon Capture and Storage Association. Andrew is also a non-executive director of Caldera Ltd, a developer of innovative heat battery technology.
