Naming the Unnamed at 10,200 Feet
During the 1880s, Leadville had the largest Irish community in the Rocky Mountain region, with roughly 3000 Irish-born people crowded into the east side of Leadville and surrounding gulches. In the Catholic Free (Pauper) section of Leadville's Evergreen Cemetery lie roughly 1,500 sunken, unmarked graves holding mostly Irish immigrants, the remains of a proud working class community. The average age of those buried there is twenty two and half of them are children 12 years and younger. This is the story of a twenty year effort to let these voices be heard and remembered.
