The Heart of the Work: Communication and Interpersonal Skills
As a career development practitioner, you can “test-‘em-and-tell-‘em” or you can engage in a meaningful interpersonal exchange with your clients. First, you need to create an environment that is conducive for clients to feel respected and supported. Second, you need to be aware of the language that allows you and your clients to exchange in a variety of meaningful ways that includes verbally, digitally, and in writing. Third, you need to be a team player by understanding and engaging in collaborative relationships with clients, colleagues, supervisors, and external communities.

In this webinar, Dr Pamelia Brott will provide concrete examples of how to accomplish these three components for meeting the CICA professional standards in communication and interpersonal skills. Situated through current approaches in career development and counselling, Dr Brott will share her expertise in constructivist approaches and qualitative assessments to help practitioners exemplify the core competencies of communicating and relating to clients. Whether you work at a Professional or Associate level, the heart of the work you do will be in your relationships with clients, colleagues, agencies, and external communities. Bring your questions and examples of challenges you are facing so that we can collaboratively engage as skilled helpers in career development.
