The COSTA CONCORDIA sank on 13 January 2012, carrying 3,229 passengers and a crew of 1,023. The Captain, Francesco Schettino, diverted the ship from its normal course to do a “salute” to a friend on Giglio Island. They hit a rock , tore a 53 metre gash in the port side causing all the vital compartments to flood and resulted in the loss of power and electricity. Our speaker is Noel Phelan from the Australian National Maritime Museum, and he will explain the chain of events that led to this disaster, and the salvaging of the ship that took years and $2 billion.
