COVID-19: The Opportunity to Improve the Oral Health System in Texas
The COVID-19 outbreak has had a system-wide impact on the oral health system in Texas. Early data suggests the pandemic presents potential health and financial challenges and disproportionately affects BIPOC communities, resulting in compounded health inequities. In order to mitigate those challenges, it is important to understand how COVID-19 has impacted oral health and access to care for vulnerable communities in Texas. The discussion of this issue brief will consider how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the oral health system and access to dental care in Texas for vulnerable populations. The issue brief will serve as a springboard to discuss recommendations for action and provide supporting information and/or data to improve access to care for vulnerable populations in Texas.

Objectives include:
1) Discuss a plan of action (or framework) for the oral health community serving primarily vulnerable populations in Texas in response to COVID19.
2) Identify pathways to be more responsive to the needs of and prioritize care for vulnerable Texas communities such as low-income, rural, and BIPOC.
3) Evaluate opportunities to improve the oral health systems in Texas in response to COVID19.
