The National Weather Service’s mission is to “provide weather, water, and climate data, forecasts and warnings for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.” In 2011 following the EF4 Tuscaloosa Tornado, the National Weather Service took a hard look at itself, and asked, how can we do better? How do we get communities to respond to our warnings? How can we create a Weather Ready Nation? To do this, the NWS underwent a major shift from focusing on the forecast and warnings alone towards working with the emergency management community to ensure the societal response equal to the risks that exist for communities, businesses, and the public. In this presentation, we will discussion the NWS’s role in the emergency management community as well as preparing for inclement weather as well as climate change.
