As host of CBC Radio One’s wildly successful “The Debaters”, Steve Patterson is a household name with more than 70,000 weekly listeners. Steady accolades for his work on that show earned him a third invitation to perform on one of Just For Laughs’ prestigious televised galas, hosted by Steve Martin. Considered to be the highlight of the show by the audience and critics alike, Patterson’s performance prompted the legendary Martin himself to quip “If I’d known he was going to be THAT good, I would have cancelled him”. Steve joins Anna to discuss how road life has become home life during the pandemic, the curious ways our Dads shape us, and how his clever and witty new book “Dad Up!” is certainly about navigating fatherhood, but really a thinly veiled tribute to the extraordinary superpowers of Moms.
In 2018, the Never Mind Comedy show began as a quiet little comedy event at the clubhouse. So quietly in fact, that the first show consisted of four comedians looking at each other in the basement. The second show, we had a sprinkle of an audience, then a dozen or so, and just as we were unstacking more chairs, COVID hit.
The little show that could, now couldn’t. But in the spirit of our members, and their gumption when life whips one at you, we will be continuing with a modified version of the show which ultimately makes it more accessible so jokes on you, COVID.
Comedy is a great connector, as are stories. Rather than park my friends in front of a computer to tell jokes at, Never Mind Comedy is going to lean into the funny stories, and origins, of the folks that tell the jokes. I love comedy and I love jokes, but the chats over on the late-night tv couch, and the talks backstage and on the road, have never failed to delight me.
So that is the path that we’re on!
