Thinking about becoming a Social Worker?
Social workers engage people and structures to change, improve and enhance wellbeing. It can be at an individual, family, community or work environmental level. At its essence, social work is about changing people’s lives for the better.
Kgomotso Ntlatleng, a Social Work Practitioner, shares her personal and professional experiences in the field. In addition, Kgomotso will elaborate on the various job opportunities and fields of practice available to Social Work graduates.
Kudzai Ngwara, a Programme Coordinator at SACAP, along with Denean Albertus, a Work Integrated Learning Coordinator at SACAP, will briefly guide us through the application process and highlight the benefits of having practical experience throughout your studies.
Lastly, Dr Poppy Masinga, SACAP’s Head of Social Work and Community Development, outlines further study options and will join the panel for our Live Q&A.

Kgomotso worked as a Child and Family Support Counsellor for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa where she rendered services to children (and their families) who had been diagnosed with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Kgomotso holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Pretoria, where she also worked as a Social Work Tutor. Kgomotso is a student enrolled for a Master of Arts in the field of Social Development at the University of the Witwatersrand. Kgomotso is also a candidate e-Facilitator in the National School of Government’s Digital Art of Facilitation Programme. Kgomotso is passionate about academia, school social work, project management, psychosocial cancer interventions, sustainable social development, policy development, and child protection. Kudzai Ngwara (Programme Coordinator - Social Work and Community Development @SACAP) Kudzai is the Programme Coordinator in the Faculty of Social Work and Community Development. Kudzai is responsible for managing the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Science programs on the Cape Town Campus! Kudzai holds a Bachelor of Social Work Degree and a Master of Social Science specialising in Social Development, and she comes to us with a wealth of experience in the field of Social Work and, specifically, community-based work. Kudzai is interested in making a positive impact with her knowledge and skills in the tertiary education sector. She is passionate about alleviating poverty in the most vulnerable communities in our society by providing psychosocial support and through conducting research that influences social policy that is key in bringing about social change. Kudzai has about 5 years' experience in social development and programme management within the non-profit sector. Kudzai also enjoys hiking, gardening, and cooking! Denean Albertus (Work Integrated Learning Coordinator - Social Work and Community Development @SACAP) Denean is a registered Social Worker who obtained her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Western Cape in 2018 with her degree conferred Summa Cum Laude. She has experience working within all three intervention levels, rendering services to children, adolescents, adults, families, and communities. Her experience ranges across the following sectors: gender-based violence, addictions, mental health, early childhood development, and higher education. She is now Work Integrated Learning Coordinator at SACAP where she coordinates the Work Integrated Learning portfolio in the Faculty of Social Work and Community Development. Dr Poppy Masinga (Head of Social Work and Community Development @SACAP) She has extensive work experience within the Government and Non-governmental sector in various fields such as medical social work; statutory care; child and family welfare; institutional/residential care; foster care and adoptions; and intellectual disabilities. She has been featured on many media platforms advocating for children’s rights and people with disabilities. Of her many skills, she has a special interest in advocating for social, economic, and environmental justice. Poppy seeks to highlight the need to tarin more social workers on preventing climate change related disasters, promoting sustainable development and holding governments and political leaders to account and advocating for policy change.
