The medieval origins of Scottish surnames and personal names
What are the origins of some of Scotland's most common surnames? How have these changed over the years?

In this exclusive event, Dr Matthew Hammond presents fascinating personal name and surname research using the People of Medieval Scotland database that he co-created, a key resource for Scottish medievalists around the world.

Dr Hammond will look at the most common men's and women's names in the PoMS database and use that to look at the different ethnolinguistic influences on Scotland in the 12th and 13th centuries.

He will then talk about how Mac- surnames evolved and how Norman French surnames came to Scotland in the 12th century, but how most Scottish surnames developed indigenously in the 13th century.

The event will comprise a 50-minute talk followed by a 30-minute Q&A, chaired by History Scotland's consultant editor Dr Allan Kennedy.
