We live in unique historical times, given our capacities to communicate instantaneously with people all over the Earth and to travel across continents in a matter of hours. Despite these technical innovations, we also live within a complex web of multiple identity structures that date from hundreds or even thousands of years in the past: local identities, ethnic identities, religious identities, national identities, ideological identities, and global identities. No wonder that there is so much miscommunication and violence.
Yet the evolutionary perspective provides much insight to help us make sense of this complexity and can provide optimistic, hopeful perspectives on our confusing and often depressing global politics. Even with all of the obstacles in our path, homo sapiens is evolving in consciousness right before our eyes.
