Functional seizures are considered a global healthcare problem, with insufficient knowledge and awareness about management being reported by epilepsy professionals worldwide. Barriers to successful treatment also include lack of access and poor adherence to appropriate care. Clinical care pathways are intended to guide approaches to illness and disease, holding together what would otherwise be a collection of uncoordinated and potentially unnecessary procedures, giving rise to longer wait times and lower quality outcomes for patients with FND. Dr. Sawchuk will review the development, implementation and validation of a care algorithm for treating functional seizures in youth at a pediatric teaching hospital in Canada. Recent research describing outcomes and treatment responsivity factors will also be discussed.
