Join Samuel Habib and he speaks with disability justice pioneer Bob Williams in the fifth of our year-long, FREE series of webinars: “Our Disability Roadmap." Bob and Samuel will discuss a wide range of issues around transition, including career pathways, higher education, independent living, AAC, advocacy, and much more. Even if you can’t attend live, be sure to register to receive a link to watch the recorded version. You will then be signed up for the entire series. The event will last approximately 60 minutes. He is a nationally recognized leader on policy issues relating to supporting people with the most significant disabilities to live, work, and thrive in their own homes and communities. As a teenager, he led a successful strike of students in his segregated special education class to fight for equal educational opportunities and inclusion in regular education classes. A graduate of George Washington University, Williams was HHS Secretary Donna Shalala’s principal advisor on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and he co-led the task force that developed the US government’s successful arguments in the Olmstead v. LC case before the US Supreme Court. Williams lives with his wife, Helen Rader, in Southwest Washington, DC. Samuel Habib (Co-Director, My Disability Roadmap @Westchester Institute for Human Development and LikeRightNow Films) Samuel Habib, 23, is an aspiring filmmaker and community college student, midway towards an associate’s degree in liberal arts. He is pursuing a career as a filmmaker and presenter, and he is the co-director of the NYT Op-Doc My Disability Roadmap with his father, Dan Habib. Samuel has been a Concord Monitor newspaper columnist, and has presented nationally on disability rights, inclusive education, and his educational and social transition to adulthood. Samuel uses a wheelchair for mobility and a communication device (as well as his voice) to express himself. In addition to exploring his current and future academic and career options, Samuel also navigates significant, chronic health challenges. Dan Habib (Co-Director, My Disability Roadmap @Westchester Institute for Human Development and LikeRightNow Films) Dan Habib is the Inclusive Communities Project Director at the Westchester Institute for Human Development and the founder of LikeRightNow Films. He is the Director and Producer of the nationally broadcast documentary films Intelligent Lives, Including Samuel, Who Cares About Kelsey?, Mr. Connolly Has ALS and many other films on disability-related topics. Dan’s films have been featured in dozens of film festivals, translated into 17 languages, and used worldwide to support inclusive education and disability rights. His current project is My Disability Roadmap, which he is Co-Directing with his son Samuel Habib. Habib gave the TEDx talk, “Disabling Segregation,” and served on President Barack Obama’s President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities from 2014-2017. Habib and his wife, Betsy McNamara, live in Concord, NH, and have two sons: Isaiah, 26, and Samuel, 23.
