Allen has been the president of Brookings since 2017. He is a retired United States Marine Corps Four-Star General and a former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He served as President Barack Obama’s special envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Allen is co-author of "Turning Point: Policymaking in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" (2020).
