Dr. Kaufman is the Chief Medical Officer of Senseonics, Inc. She is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Pediatrics and Communications at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She is an attending physician at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she served as Director of the Comprehensive Childhood Diabetes Center, and head of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Previously, she was the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Global Regulatory, Clinical and Medical Affairs at Medtronic Diabetes from 2009-2019. She has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles, and over 30 books. Dr. Kaufman was the national president of the American Diabetes Association from 2002-2003. She was recognized by the California State Senate for her work in banning sodas in LA Unified School District (2004) and appointed by Congress as a Local Legend with the American Woman’s Medical Association. Crystal Woodward, MPS (Director Safe at School Campaign @American Diabetes Association) Crystal Woodward, MPS, is the Director of the Association’s Safe at School Campaign based in the Association’s home office in Arlington, VA. Crystal is considered a national authority on the rights of students with diabetes and has spoken at conferences and forums throughout the United States and internationally on how to effectively advocate on behalf of students with diabetes, training hundreds of parent advocates, attorneys, and health care professionals. A parent of a child with diabetes, Crystal began her advocacy as a volunteer for ADA when she and another parent advocate teamed up to lead the passage the first state diabetes school legislation in the country which provides comprehensive coverage for students with diabetes in Virginia. Simultaneously she pursued a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Education resulting in a settlement that is a nationwide model for safe and effective school diabetes care. Aaron Fischer, JD (Chair @ADA Legal Advocacy Subcommittee) Aaron Fischer is a Bay Area-based attorney specializing in civil and constitutional rights, disability rights, employment matters, and complex civil and class action litigation. Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a teenager, Aaron has committed himself to overcoming challenges and helping others do the same. He has for years worked with the American Diabetes Association to support its legal advocacy work, including as a member of the National Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. He regularly represents workers, students, families, and others on diabetes-related legal issues, including reasonable accommodations and equal access/opportunity in the workplace, at school, in childcare programs, at camps, in detention facilities, and more. Braun, PhD (Health Psychologist @ADA Safe at School Advocate) Dr. Beth Braun is a Wellness Expert specializing in diabetes management, nutrition, and behavior modification for over 25 years. In her private practice Dr. Braun works with adults and children faced with diabetes burnout, anxiety, depression. She works closely with JDRF, ADA and several diabetes camps running groups on how to stay motivated and integrate body and mind wellness. She currently runs groups for children and adults with type 1 diabetes, as well as parents of T1D children. Dr. Braun is the Director of Mental Health for KidShape, a family-based wellness program for over 25 years. There she helped develop curriculum to create healthy lifestyles and help fight type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. She was included in media including Newsweek magazine, Oprah, and 20/20 discussing how family can develop a healthy lifestyle. Kara Hornbuckle (T1D/T1D Parent/Director of Development @Sansum Diabetes Research Institute) Kara Hornbuckle has lived with type 1 diabetes (T1D) for over 30 years and has two children with T1D, her son Lucas is 11 years old, and her daughter Kamryn is 8. She is a fierce advocate for children living with diabetes, and currently serves as the Director of Development at Sansum Diabetes Research Institute.
