Writer Confidential: Following the Pebble Mine

The highly contentious Pebble Mine, nestled in southwest Alaska’s prolific salmon-producing Bristol Bay watershed, seeks to develop the largest untapped deposits of copper and gold in the world. Since May 2019, Hakai Magazine reporter Ashley Braun has carved out a niche, covering the emerging developments and environmental impacts of the proposed project. Her stories have covered glaring gaps in the company’s mitigation plans, the secretly recorded “Pebble Tapes,” and regulatory changes by the Trump administration that would expedite the mine’s approval.
