Police are killing Californians with alarming frequency but rarely held accountable for these deaths. In 2017, police killed 172 Californians, according to California Department of Justice data.
Police should never kill when they have alternatives to deadly force. While this seems like a common-sense standard, it isn’t the current practice.
This year, California lawmakers have the power to change the state’s deadly use of force law to prevent unnecessary shootings and save lives.
California can and must hold police to a higher standard to reduce the number of deadly shootings.
