Join us on 17 September at 14:00 SAST for live case study presentations:
Moderator: Nico Pienaar, Director, ASPASA
Topic 1: How does one mitigate material failures?
The presentation will cover aspects of in-house testing, as well as setting up checks and balances with the other parties involved in approving the material once onsite. This will include an overview of a basic yet effective in-house quality management system, approval of external testing facilities and the links between client, engineer, main contractor, SANAS accredited commercial laboratories and the material supplier.
Speaker: Barry Pearce, Founder, Learning Matters Etc
Topic 2: How does perfectly good concrete fail? A case study part 1 of 5
Go Consult was commissioned by a ready-mix supplier to assist when cubes started to fail and concrete was rejected in Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP). This had the effect that concrete was rejected and had to be broken out and other concrete was subjected to reduced payment. The Colto Specification does not allow cores in pavements, so if there is a problem with the testing what is the next step? This situation is not at all unique. In road structures cores are allowed, but reduced payments apply on cubes that failed when cores proved the concrete acceptable. This presentation will cover pointers on how to address this testing trap.
