Developing Mathematical Thinking with 2-5 year olds
For our youngest children, how do they share with us their own mathematical meanings and thinking through representational and playful means? Through the exploration of young children’s own drawings and with exploring and experimenting with open ended materials such as loose parts, we can take a look into their mathematical thinking processes if we know what to be looking out for. In knowing what to see, we can thus be better attuned to our own children’s ways of thinking mathematically so as best to support their growth in learning. We will look at some key examples from practice that we can consider to think deeply about the kinds of materials and resources we can use to promote and amplify contexts for representing mathematical thinking in our early childhood classrooms and environments.
