What are your big takeaways from Whole Class discussion rules? What do you do well already? What is one thing you want to add to your toolkit when leading whole class discussions?
Kirshna
03:31
First, did you hit record?! :)
Kirshna
04:43
Not gonna lie, I was a bad student and didn't watch the video beforehand. Sorry. But I've been struggling reeling the kids back in. I have the LISTEN acronym posted and I reference that a TON, but the getting kids BACK is an issue
Kirshna
07:23
I'm so so bad at narrating. I've conciously tried to get to it!
Teri
09:35
Definitely love the countdown!
Erica
10:49
In terms of whole group discussion I want to start incorporating gestures into my teaching to signal to students what type of response I want—whether they should all shout out, whether they should raise their hand, etc. I’ve been struggling with designing a reward/consequence system: Individual merits/demerits vs whole class points, etc.
Holly
11:02
I’ve tried narration too and I feel like it’s kind of weird in my tiny classes of 7-10 kids… maybe I just need practice!
Kirshna
11:04
I think it might be great for me to be meta with the students and tell that when I got to this spot, I'm super serious and y'all need to quiet down!
Teri
15:33
I need to work on narrating more consistently also- oh and naming the problem when a student doesn't follow expectations and then giving an immediate chance to get it (sometimes I struggle to make that natural).
Carla Tarini
23:09
FYI- I made a set of posters and cheat sheets for myself. I’m happy to share with the group. They are word docs. I tried to share before her but it didn’t work.
Hellga
23:34
yes, please!!
Kirshna
23:39
Could you share a list/pictures of those hand signals that you used?
Hellga
23:52
i haven’t had time to do anything like that
Hellga
32:39
Narrating is new to me and it WORKS. My kids do want to do the right thing but they aren‘t thinking and I‘ve seen them go „oh, yes, that‘s what she wants us to do“ and then comply
Holly
32:42
@Carla -yes, please!!
Jon Cowart
32:48

Carla Tarini
44:51
I got a lot of the names from Sra Chase
Carla Tarini
45:28
I couldn’t find more diverse images for the hand signal prompts. Sorry!
Hellga
45:47
i dont remember
Holly
45:48
no, I haven’t been able to -just view
Cate
46:10
I too can only view. There doesn't seem to be a way to just print.
Teri
46:13
I have been downloading the course ppts. but that's all

Hellga
46:38

Kirshna
46:39
Did you just upload them, or did I miss it?
Cate
46:49
Google Drive sounds good!
Holly
46:53
oh no now it looks like they’re all downloadable -wasn’t like that before
Carla Tarini
47:11
Google drive might change the spacing so check it before you make copies!!
Carla Tarini
47:45
I can share my big TPR doc too
Carla Tarini
48:23
Question: do yo make power points for every day?
Hellga
48:23
Is this our last session?
Hellga
48:45
I understand.
Hellga
48:56
Yes, thank you!
Holly
49:00

Jon Cowart
49:02
Feedback
Jon Cowart
49:07
What was effective?
Jon Cowart
49:12
Next time try...
Kirshna
50:10
Feedback: This was GREAT! I loved that it was broken over 4 weeks and had videos we could watch on our own time. I loved the Q&A sessions. I got the most out of those. Next time try... hitting record for the first session? (That was a joke. I seriously can't think of anything I would have liked differently)
Holly
50:29
so… I want to incorporate EVERYTHING I’m learning from you AND all I’m learning from Tina at CI Liftoff but it feels difficult to know when to take the time to do your cool stuff and when to do HER cool stuff :)
Holly
50:56
not sure you can do anything about that lol
Kirshna
51:02
Holly, it's like we need to do all the things all the time, but we lose ourselves it seems!
Hellga
51:10
Definitely narrating is very effective for me. Setting expectations (enter quietly etc. etc.) was effective for me. To be honest, every bit of information helped me out. I don‘t have many or big discipline issues but by learning from you I can refine my teaching to be more effective. For example telling kids how to behave/what to do when. Is BIG.
Kirshna
51:26
Question - any chance you're going to NTPRS next year in Minneapolis?
Holly
53:16
thank you that’s so helpful!
Hellga
53:20
dito
Holly
53:30
@Kirshna YES
Holly
54:12
AND… I should say I LOVED everything about this course and what I learned -so clear, concise, great advice
Kirshna
54:41
omg please go!
Kirshna
54:45
You can present for SURE
Teri
55:17
I think that in terms of the course material all the visual/audio examples were the most effective for me- and the cheat sheets will bring back the audio and video in my memory of you saying/doing it- like narrating, signals, etc.-so concrete!
Hellga
55:37
You have a real talent to share / teach your ideas. That we now have two videos to watch forever is awesome.
Kirshna
56:52
Thank you!!
Carla Tarini
57:03
Thanks Jon.
Hellga
57:07
Thank you! I will contact you!!! Yes, wishing you all the best!
Teri
57:12
Thank you and take care!
Holly
57:12
oh! can you say what “CFU” stands for one more time?!
Hellga
57:16
Bye everybody!
Cate
57:21
Learning Narrating has been wonderful. Thank you so much for all this!!!
Hellga
57:27
I know what FU is .... ;)
