I’m not sure I’m clear on the exact goals of this ArtDE&i organization. Is this an introductory year where the group is deciding specific goals?
Is part of the solution giving pre-service teachers a broader art history to include MORE than Western art as a required for certification?

We have a EDI committee in our district but there are no arts teachers involved. I am going to join this committee. What is the most import thing I can bring to the table?
We have secured some funding for work with Cultural Competency in Teachng and Leadership Certificate pilot program over the next 2 years.

The National Standards work included the Kennedy Center's vast network of people working with special needs students and our Visual Arts Standards page on the NAEA website also includes a specific guide they prepared for visual arts educators.
What kind of training do you recommend for white teachers who don’t exactly feel that this work is vital for ALL students. I am also curious how to stop micro-aggressions such as confusing students of Color. How should teachers best handle that in the moment and how should we handle it as teachers when we see another teacher make this embarrassing mistake?

The Cultural Competency in TEaching and Leadershp Pilot Certificate Program is work that we are starting but it is beyond the Task Force. There is a national advisory Council forming. Once we pilot a curricu;um developed through this work, we look to get feedback about what works and revise accordingly. This is a multi-year initiative. The Task Force is focused on the association.

Hello Dr. Knight! Questions from my Intro to Art Ed students and I: 1. How can we make our curriculum more diverse as art educators?
As a white male, I believe I present a diverse group of contemporary artists / practices to my students- how do I maintain a genuine feel for this- so as it doesn’t come across as being forced? How do I better address the experience of diversity with my white privleged students?
what can art educators do to advance students’ understanding of whiteness? what are ways to do this through art? can it be built into the curriculum?

Can you also speak about the importance of inclusion of diverse representation of inspiring of artists when teaching. I find that too many art teachers are still showing Picasso and Van Gogh and not including artists such as Carrie Mae Weems, or Kerry James Marshall, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Michalene Thomas, and the list goes on
The field of art ed is closely defined by, and related to access into college, art + design and teacher prep programs. There seems be both a real and perceived assumption that majoring in the arts or becoming a future art educator is less financially viable compared to many other career paths, especially for those seeking to rise out of inherited, low income family patterns. These structural obstacles seems overwhelming, However, how might NAEA partner with elementary and high school levels to advocate for the arts-based careers as a major campaign in recruiting diverse and low-resource communities into the field.

There is at buzz word in education about "Belonging" that is a school wide initiative. Maybe it is asking students and families what they would like to happening to feel like they "Belong" to a school.
