Dinah, Pam and Eric will be part of the Q&A after the California Panel, please share questions for them here. Among OR, WA and CO, folks in NY, Illinois and Nevada are also gearing up for statewide rent control initiatives next year as well as in Providence, RI (among other potential cities)

l.a. people likely know this, but the City of West Hollywood was incorporated out of the results of a failed county-wide rent control initiative (in the 80s) and observing the concentration of high pro-rent control support in that area.

I failed to mention how close the National City vote was: the latest count has Measure W down 373 votes out of 10,737 votes cast (52.7% No to 48.3% Yes). Countywide Prop 10 lost with 61.8% voting No.

Hi- I might have missed it but how are groups using voter lists? Is anyone developing listsof tenant buildings to match with voter files?
Malcolm, he/him, Right To The City Alliance
01:54:50
thanks @Michael for the question
Peter - CPI
01:56:08
@michael, that's an interesting question. One could use Census ACS data to identify Census tracts/blocks with higher concentrations of renter households, and even where the rent burden (% of income paid in rent) is higher.
Michael Fogelberg
01:57:15
Assessors lists are very useful and typically specify rental properties in their codes.

In C,A, the $74M prpaganda campaign misledmay voters to vote againt their own interests. The LL/RE lobby will always spend big money filled with lies and misconceptions. During this period, how can advocates educate voters to the lies, and to the fact that Costa-Hawkins is the cause of high rents and massiive displacement and that LL/TE lobby will always lie to maintain uncontrolled greed. and unlimited power to abuse tenants. ,

We are also looking a property records, so we can organize buildings owned by particular corporate landlords/management companies, potentially building toward multi-building tenant associations or unions; as well, we can incorporate the corporate accountability piece into the broader campaign

The GIS mapping piece was also very important supporting the LA County rent control tenant protections work. Specifically the anti eviction mapping project did amazing work: http://antievictionmappingproject.net/losangeles.html

There has been a perceived division between renters and voter. A lot of our work is bringing these two categories together... It certainly makes sense to follow up with identified rent control supporters from GOTV work.

The Map of REIT owned homes in California can be a useful tool. This was produced to support ACCE's report on Wall Street landlords.Map: https://mabood.carto.com/builder/11510708-b046-4b4c-b31a-8238135b52e9/embed

Rene spoke to this earlier, one of the ways we dig into narrative shift work is through public and direct action and being clear about the audience we are speaking to. Mass direct actions, coordinated actions (like the Renter Day & Week of Actions) and mass public assemblies that visibilize renters as a political force and class. We also think it’s critical that we aren’t talking about the housing crisis as bricks & mortar/construction, but as about homes and all the things that can happen when people have a safe, dignified and affordable home. the ways we can build community, raise kids, grow old, break bread together, etc…
