Blogging Workshop w/ Shaunta + Shannon - Shared screen with speaker view
Yay I made it! Hi friends
Resting grumpy face?
pretty links are the boxes? please explain
Hey, I have a question — I heard you say something recently about “curation jail” where they just stop looking at your posts for curation.
“Our curators were not able to review this story for distribution in topics due to high volume. This story will still be shared with followers.
workshop time :)
excuse my ignorance, but when you say tag do you mean imbed a link? thank you!

Regarding what Al said, I received that message multiple times too. Then, I submitted a post to P.S. I Love You, which was published there & curated! I also took a lot of Shaunta's advice prior to publishing that piece & the main change I made WAS related to the photo. For anyone interested, the link to that essay is here: https://psiloveyou.xyz/what-borderline-personality-disorder-codependency-taught-me-about-loss-love-539b0bc164a6
I feel like you could write a whole post about James Altucher’s Idea Sex thing, and refer to it at the end of “The Creative Well” section and it would work nicely. I’m not sure a whole section on what Idea Sex is about worked so well with the subject of the post, as Shaunta mentioned
Makes sense Jonathan
@marilyn it is a way of highlighting someones name by writing it the way I just wrote yours
and when I say refer to it, I mean link to it ;)
gotta keep that audience locked in
Al, I had the same problem and after a couple of emails they are now looking at everything
You went and made her excited Al
lol now I gone and done it!
Loved that post too.

I have a question about fans: Many of Shannon's essays have stated the importance of fans. How exactly does one become a fan of an essay (or gain fans of essays) on Medium?
Kelli, a lot of people pay attention to how many claps they get, but Fans are the amount of individual people who had clapped (regardless of how many times they have clapped) - that’s my understanding of it, anyway
So say you get 200 claps, but it’s just 4 people clapping 50 times each - ie, 4 fans. I mean obviously that’s still awesome. But the importance of fans is having more people viewing and responding/clapping to your posts which will increase your traction and increase the likelihood of stuff like curation
Jonathan — do the fans count both paying and non paying members?
I would love to do medium I just fearful of not doing well being a new writer
That one I’mma have to leave for Shaunta or Shannon
Cathy everyone starts somewhere :)
I mean honestly I prefer the human touch to ~~ the algorithm ~~ (looking at you amazon)
Yes, I’m just saying the number of fans on the stats page — not every one of those “fans” is necessarily a paying member, right?

I have another question: How do you network across Medium with other Medium writers? I appreciate this opportunity right now & am curious about what else exists. Thank you all for your time!
Eric has his hand up?
I see you Eric!
that suspense thing again Shaunta
will try soon😎
I struggle with that, finding my voice. I really wish I knew how to write in a totally natural voice like Shannon does...
Shaunta is the master of suspense lol
I hear that natural voice in my head, but I come out sounding stilted.
It sounded like to me that they were _required_ to clap for everyone else, which may be a little weird
is Shannon typing ferociously
Honestly I like the sound
no typing lol
Someone is writing an INTERNET DIATRIBE
I am on my phone, no actual keyboard lol
okay :) I could hear typing and from your video I thought maybe it was you :D
Shannon do we have the same last name?
when you were talking about your anon account :P
when you started saying you thought to say something about your anony account, but forgot what it was...it was like when you were telling Al the secret to why he wasn’t being curated...and then promptly disconnected :D
She keeps ‘em guessing, that’s the real secret lol
reading aloud really helps with phrasing (in my fiction, at least), especially when I’m like...hang on this all has the same rhythm and is really boring to read
This has been incredibly helpful thank you so much
this was an awesome session
yes Al lol, my last name is Nelson
in case i dont get to say it out loud, the workshop process makes a HUGE difference, because Shaunta gives great input that makes difference curate vs not curated...ya'll come!!!
glad to hear it Marilyn :D
I’d like to talk about getting email subscribers via Medium.
oh that’s a good one Maya
I totally agree with Marilyn. The workshops are great.
my reluctance with the workshops, is that t’s workshopping written material, right? and that assumes we have written something to workshop -hides face in shame-
I’ll work my way up to thinking I can take one of those on next time round
Thanks Al for sharing, by the way
ok, got run....thanks everyone
Shaunta, Shannon, everybody, thanks so much. This was cool.
ditto i always get something rich from these!!!! I look forward to seeing ya'll on Medium!

Talking about email next week would be great. I am really interested in talking more about how to network across Medium next week. Thank you for this time tonight!
I have 139 followers and I’ve never posted on Medium.
