Running the show LIKE YOU DO, Hebh!

01:10:01
Haha thank you :)

01:12:04
We restructured enrollment to include SES status and home language in SF and it still results in segregated schools. We have only 3% Black students in a district with 9% Black students.

01:18:14
Feel free to submit your questions here folks. This is your time if you want it!

01:19:24
OR in the Q&A…

01:20:50
We found affluent parents organized networks to share information to “game” the system. I work with Black parent groups and hear many Black parents don’t even go through the application process. We are working with families, but without concentrated outreach, many families don’t even know this process exists.

01:22:20
Hebh is 17

01:22:24
She is a freshman in college

01:22:27
Matthew is 16

01:22:30
He is a junior in HS.

01:22:46
She designed the algorithm as a HS senior.

01:24:32
I’m from SF. And, yes, I’ve heard about the ‘games’ in LA.

01:26:46
Can we just remove the barrier of an application? Before all these magnets (e.g. integration) students just went to the HS they were assigned.

01:32:03
NYC communities are the third most segregated in the country.

01:32:24
And district lines are drawn to divide

01:32:35
Assignment is tricky!

01:33:41
In SF, our Black students walked out due to microagression they experienced with staff and students. Bostin Latin started a hashtag campaign to push back on racist treatment from peers. These BSU students demanded mandatory teacher professional development. Many teachers resist. What are your thoughts?

01:33:57
Its one of our student policies!

01:34:54
Can you reword that question, Marie?

01:35:00
I don’t full understand.

01:37:44
Lol hey sarah

01:38:05
CEJ

01:38:24
Currently advocating for the mayor to use the promised funds for culturally responsive training and curriculum in schools

01:41:44
The NAACP has called for a moratorium on charters. Charters aren’t necessarily better. Especially when they push out Black, SPED and ELL kids.

01:43:40
True!

01:44:09
The public system didn’t “fail” students any more than any other system. It sounds like you are adding to the racist narrative of “failing” public schools. We never talk about how suburban schools “fail” Black/Brown kids, or independent schools “fail” Black/Brown kids.

01:44:40
In NYC we have large constituencies of parents advocating for charters. Hebh was speaking to honoring peoples choices and asking why they don’t trust community public schools. I think this is a question we must consider and engage in our conversation. What do you think about that idea?

01:45:53
Charters are more selective, they require more effort to enroll, many/most don’t offer services to ELL or SPED students, and sometimes require students to have parents who can participate. How is that offering access to all students?

01:46:26
IntegrateNYC does not believe charter schools offer access to all students.

01:48:17
The movie featured Success Academy who had a push out list.

01:49:25
This is true. Ali are you asking if we support that?

01:50:22
I know we only have two minutes left.

01:50:26
We do not agree with Eva’s comments in that film.

01:50:41
If anyone would like to continue these conversations please email us: hello@integratenyc4me.com

01:50:41
Shouldn’t we get rid of specialized and screened schools altogether?

01:51:04
It’s more complicated than that but less to sarah point

01:51:08
yes*

01:51:12
One hour is not enough to unpack this issue across an entire country.

01:51:31
Interesting point!

01:52:06
One of our policies is removing exclusionary middle school and HS screens and replacing them with community-designed algorithms.

01:52:35
The film is called Teach Us All.

01:53:11
Its out.

01:53:11
It’s out!

01:53:21
SFUSD is the ONLY urban school I am aware of that has eliminated middle school tracking in “honors classes. It got a lot of pushback but has stuck. Have you considered pushing to eliminate similar “merit-based” academic tracking?

01:54:23
that’s what we’re trying to do with the algorithm. Step by step.
