Who can see your viewing activity?
Sorry all — we’re doing quite a few webinars and sometimes that happens. Thanks for being here!
I can't either.
I don’t see anything in chat either

I also see chats.
good to go
I just switched my settings. Thank you.
Good to go. Thank you.
Thank you. Now it works
got it, now I can. thanks
Thanks for that tip!
Would you kindly address the issue of assessment and providing certificates?
How to do assessments that separate language skills vs. technology skills?
I'm concerned about Ss' access to technoogy
I am very concerned about Ss’ access to tech too.
Asynchronous is helpful when lo-tech and access issues
My students are studying by phone.
So is mobile-friendly options, app, tools
Using panopto v. zoom v. screencastomatic for recording video
Campuses should be hiring bilingual tech helpers/students in many languages
I'd love to have more translations of directions and materials in various languages
We use Canvas at my college - ss will need support in their L1s
Yes - support in L1
My low-tech students are sharing their phones with their children so even hard to access at home!:0
How to ensure assessments are being done by the students and within the parameters of the assessment rules
I agree that the biggest issue is getting students on to online platforms when not f2f.
There are lots of nice apps that can be used asynchronously: Flipgrid, Pronto, Padlet
How to ensure ss have enough speaking prax in an asynchronous delivery
Students used to getting tutoring help are finding it hard to get such help online
Need to try breakout rooms with ESL instruction
Does anyone have a list of various online tools and what they do? panopto, screencastomatic, voicethread, etc.
It would be very useful if we get access to our classrooms in order to pick up more material by appointment and obeying social distancing rules.
FYI, reach out to @ONE (Online Network of Educators) for faculty and mentors who have experience teaching ESL (credit and noncredit) online across the state.
Where are things at with remote placement for new students entering EL programs? No need to answer it now, but it is a concern that I and others have and are trying to work through.
It seems like K - 12 students have a greater degree of access and availability for tablets. When will the state be giving community college students this kind of availability?
The CVC-OEI is also putting together a list of resources and what they do — many of those are on their website
In Zoom, you can get transcriptions. They take about 20 hours to receive in my District, but these are great.
yes, I have a student who was so worried about using Zoom but when we tried it, she found it so easy to use and even did a presentation with her group partner on Zoom and showed it to our class.
You can take attendance in Canvas
suggestion: Have students sign in within chat while using Zoom.
Tech Tools for ESL https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/the-diesol-podcast/diesol-007-20-tools-for-2020-LCK24eHdsXT/
For now, I am taking photos of zoom screens capturing student tiles for documenting positive attendance.
Proctorio is one type of software that is available for monitoring of assessments
Doing lots of student projects and portfolios w/reflection, video, etc that shows reaching SLOs instead of high-stakes exams
Would it be possible for you to spell out your acronyms? I'm not in CA>
Good idea, Sharon - yes, have students sign in on Chat for attendance
do you have any privacy concerns regarding Proctorio
I am getting training today - this afternoon. Evergreen Valley College has used Proctorio for awhile.
CATESOL/TESOL - not every instructor is a member
Privacy concerns are a big concern on our campus given that students didn’t sign up for online with webcams and proctoring of their devices.
Agreed Kathy — we have heard about this as well.
RE: Placement - Cypress just confirmed yesterday the availability of remote assessment with CELSA
Is there an extension on the timeline to pilot placement tools? We were about to pilot something for the July report when all of this happened.
Do we need to add online addendum to all our course outlines or would the Chancellor extend umbrella clause for all classes to be offered online?
Suggestion: create forums by level for the teachers to share online resources.
Any tips on how much material to include? If the face-to-face course is 16 hours a week, should we attempt to make the online version take the same amount of time?
Please try breakout rooms in Zoom. Really, really useful (and fun)
Students do not have to restrict themselves to phone. They can download the Zoom app on their cell phones to get the full lecture......well, sort of.
If I post assignments and answers from my textbook so students can correct their homework, is that a copyright violation?
If you do it on your Canvas, not a copyright issue
My students don't know Canvas. We've been using a mix of Facebook and email
Anyone know of multilingual resources re: zoom?
The scribbling could be because Annotations are enabled
When people talk about what works well for their ESL ss, could you please mention the proficiency level of the students?
Low intermediate to higher levels love breakout rooms

I believe the publishers will provide e-texts if contacted in this environment. I have made such requests recently for adjuncts with positive results.
Breakout rooms worked perfectly fine with my level 2 students.
I bought a doc camera (Ipevo recommended) for $99. You can get around the copyrights problems in live classrooms.
In my high beginning class of 27 there are always like 3 students who won’t join the breakout room. they just stay in the main session and talk about the lesson
I have used breakout rooms w/students and they share their screen & annotate on it. Is there a way to save their screens and whiteboards so that it can be shared (with their annotations) to the whole class in Zoom?
I think on the top right of the whiteboard there is an option to save it (?)
@Rebecca R- Thanks. I know that there is for the main room for saving whiteboard, but I'm not sure about when in breakout rooms. hmm.
Thank you for posting, Dr. Maduli-Williams.
Reupping this message: RE: Placement - Cypress just confirmed yesterday the availability of remote assessment with CELSA
The page that’s open to all is really general. The good stuff requires membership and a log in to the myTESOL COVID-19 interest group
Thanks for that information Kathy!
You can kick bombers. Use remove function from Participants.
tesol.org - Within myTESOL, browse and add resources to the COVID-19 Resources Group library items that would be most useful to educators and their learners (you need a FREE myTESOL login to access, but this is an open forum that anyone can join and participate in).
I love snagit
My L/speak students really like sharing and replying to each other on Flipgrid
Cambridge also has been amazing
Anyone know of zoom directions/info in various languages?
With regard to placement, Accuplacer is hosting a number of webinars next week on how to do remote placement, but I'm curious if we can get an extension on the whole July placement report deadline.
youtube has instructions for in various languages
A big problem in my class is that I am tech savvy, but my students are not. I don't want to spend a lot of time building out my Canvas course or assigning work from my textbook website if they're not going to use it
How can we get info on the Accuplacer trainings that are being hosted>
In the breakout rooms, students often help each other. It is a great way for some students to really shine and help others
Any tips for low-level and low-tech ss? Which online features are the easiest for ss to self-access?
In terms of equity, are college districts purchasing wifi hotspots for students who don't have them?
Kahoot is low-tech and easy for mini assessments for all levels.
Are your ss generally willing to call each other on the phone? This seems like a work-around for low-tech ss or those with internet issues...FERPA issue?

Catherine, here is some low tech ESL at home stuff! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Dembf25W3iivRz-kwoeLu8fS_A8JJeJT/view
https://wifi.xfinity.com/ free hotspots
Thank you for posting info related to grants to tech or info on reasonable tech
Flipgrid is great for asynchronous speaking and it has great Canvas integration.
CORA Recorded webinar: Employing equity-minded and culturally affirming teaching and learning practices in virtual learning communities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMrf_MC5COk
Welcome. About 28:00 minutes in are the recommendations for the CORA website
Our college is offering summer classes and requiring instructors to be certified to teach online.
MJC will be offering online EL classes, both credit and non-credit. Looking for the access to the Accuplacer webinars. Wait ... I have kids asking me how to do homework :-&
Are any colleges planning to be fully online for Fall 2020?
Free LMS called NEO was recommended. www.neolms.com It’s like Canvas.
All summer courses are online.
For our college.
Our college hasn't said anything about summer yet.

CSU East Bay has an online certificate
Will we receive this recording later? I'm seeing some helpful links I'd like to catch.
Our college's plan is to go f2f in fall, but it is requiring all teachers to have instruction ready to go in Canvas should the need arise to go remote on short notice.
Thank you all
Thanks, Leigh Anne & Dolores!
Thank you, and GOOD LUCK to all!
Thanks SO much!
